Hi, James here, your friendly One 2 Pass Driving School Instructor in Caloundra.
As per normal on my blogs, I’m going to base this on my own personal opinion or experience and / or supported from sources, facts and / or legislation quoted for driving on Queensland’s roads.
Today I’m going to talk about; Driving, tailgating and rubber banding.
So this is a great topic… I like to discuss many topics of driving with my students. I feel this helps each and every student in their preparation as a safe driver that is looking to successfully pass their practical driving examination test.
Tailgating.
No one likes another driver who tailgates your vehicle with their vehicle. It’s not cool. It’s not smart. It’s not safe. Tailgating is aggressive driving behaviour and an unsafe driving practice that causes other road users to become frustrated, anxious, nervous and in extreme cases, scared for their life whilst driving behind the wheel of their car. When you have a vehicle tailgating your vehicle you now have two vehicles to manage. You are now having to think for two drivers from your position of driver in your own vehicle. This is because the second vehicle that’s tailgating your vehicle has reduced vision along with reduced ability and reaction time to stop safely in an emergency situation. If you are driving your car whereby someone is tailgating you my best advice is to change lanes and let the tailgater pass by. Put some distance between you if possible. If you are driving your car following behind a vehicle that is tailgating another vehicle, you will know this because the vehicle tail gating driver is constantly tapping their brake lights on and off. My best advise is to place plenty of distance between you and the tail gating vehicle/s displaying unsafe driving practices. YOU have no idea of their state of mind or abilities as a driver.
DO NOT TAILGATE!
Rubber banding.
What is rubber banding? Have you ever experienced a terrible driver, driving behind your vehicle who just doesn’t seem to be able to manage keeping a constant safe road speed, constantly pulling up to your vehicles rear bumper and dropping back away from your vehicle? These are the extremely bad and potentially dangerous drivers!
My best advice is to move your vehicle when it safe to do so out of harms way. Perhaps pull over if safe to do so and let the vehicle pass you or, if on a multiple lane road change lanes and let that driver pass and overtake you, then you can continue on your safe journey.
DO NOT RUBBER BAND WHEN DRIVING!
In car dash cams.
If possible I would be investing in, in car dash cams. A good dash cam that is at least 2 Chanels with front and rear recording. When it comes down to an insurance claim, it’s hard to argue against actual incident footage.
State of mind!
Do you know the state of mind of any other road user on the road? It’s unlikely that you would. You can’t manage stupid you can only manage you. How would you know if the other road user is fatigued, angry, Intoxicated or high on drugs or alcohol? Has this road user just bet his or her wage for the week on a horse race or footy game and lost? This person now has to go home and face his or her husband, wife, partner etc and explain that they lost money and that this weeks wages are gone. Perhaps the rental or mortgage isn’t going to be paid. Food not able to be purchased for the family table. You can just imagine the bad choices that this individual is capable of making and could easily transfer onto the road where other drivers are then at risk because of their poor choices.
